From the doorstep

A Scottish Island holiday has so much to offer, from relaxation and peace and quiet to amazing beaches, scenery and wildlife. The location of Balranald Bay View holiday cottage on a stunning white sandy beach, within Balranald RSPB Reserve, means you have plenty to explore on the doorstep. The light is constantly changing and has the special clarity you find on the West coast which artists and photographers will appreciate.

Every time you walk from the cottage there is a special moment to enjoy, whether it is a sighting of an Eagle, Otter or the Wading birds displaying over the Machair. In summer the scent of the flowers on the Machair drifts to the garden.

Wild swimming in the turquoise clear water, kayaking, paddle boarding, kite surfing and rock pooling are all within 5 minutes walk and can be accessed directly from the garden.

Swim in the bay

Enjoy the crystal clear turquoise sea. Watch the fish shimmering as you swim with birds flying overhead. Then enjoy a well deserved hot bath or shower within 5 minutes of walking out of the sea.

Revitalising and rejuvenating!

Enjoy RSPB Balranald reserve

Explore the reserve alone or join an RSPB guided walk with an RSPB Ranger.

Watch the waders displaying in Spring or nesting in Summer. Raptors hunt overhead and the Machair is full of life.

There is excellent walking direct from the cottage without the need to drive anywhere or to set foot on road.

Grass tracks and a series of gorgeous firm, flat, white sand beaches allow continuous walking for many miles in solitude.

The pure air, wild ocean vistas, vast skyscapes, the sweet scent of the machair wildflowers in summer makes this a walker's paradise.

Walk around the headland to Traigh Iar beach. Walk to the blowhole or further on to the surfing beach of Hosta

Watch the sunset into the sea
from the garden

The sunsets here are astonishingly beautiful. During the summer months, the colours are predominantly red and orange whilst in winter they have a purple hue. Sunsets are always different and it is very special to be able to watch the sun set into the sea. Watch for the elusive green flash as the setting sun dips over the horizon.

Enjoy preparing fresh local food including lobster, scallops, langoustines, crab claws and smoked fish in the large well equipped kitchen

Eat al-fresco in the garden with a glass of something special. The views, wildlife and sunset will provide the entertainment!

Enjoy the sea views in the comfortable lounge

Watch the ever-changing colours as the sea gently rolls in and out of the bay. The birdlife on view changes with the tide. Lapwings and Oystercatchers feed in the garden

With luck you might see the elusive Corncrake which has been seen in the garden every Spring for the last few years
